Dance Beat
Everything is alive and dances to the rhythms of nature. As Witches and Pagans, we can leave our inhibitions and self-doubt behind within the dance and become absorbed into nature’s rhythm. We are the dance. Through dance we can enact a form of self-hypnosis that can aid in our journeying practices. As we weave and shift and move about, the dance acts as a catalyst in guiding us to achieve altered states of consciousness that lead us to our spirit guides and connects us with the universal flow of energy. The dance helps us transform not only ourselves, but the world around us. As I will reiterate throughout this book, we are interwoven with all of nature. We are a partner in the dance, if you will, that overlaps and intertwines our world with the otherworld, creating a beautiful tapestry that most people in our mundane lives are never really aware of.
Much of the work of shamanic healers involves movement and dance. It is used as a form of journey that opens the doorway to the world of spirits. Movements that emulated events in the stories of the gods of our ancient ancestors or mimicked the rhythms of nature were acted out in accompaniment to the music of pipes and harps. Dance was used to express celebration, ritual inauguration, or even grief by funerary mourners, as was the practice in ancient Egypt. It could be ecstatic and uninhibited, such as the frenzied dances performed by practitioners of the Dionysiac cults of ancient Greece, or it could be subtle and formalized, like the dances of Hindu priestesses whose stylized hand gestures are still being used in the classical Indian dance Bharatanatyam.
The thought of dancing, for some of us, can trigger some serious anxiety. But believe it or not, movement can empower us by allowing us to shake off lingering negative emotions that have built up over time—and just like exercise or sex, dancing releases neurotransmitters that help us feel good.
I find dance to be one of the most powerful tools in my Witchy bag of tricks. In my mundane life, I feel I have a pretty good intellectual understanding of the world that I live in. But how lovely it is to be able slip into dance, where I am free to
